The Life of a Writer…

Well, I thought I would give you guys an idea of the life of a writer. It’s not exactly what I thought it would be. Granted, I’m NOT complaining. I love writing my highly erotic stories and books and am now branching out finally getting back to my campy murder mysteries written about community associations – something I have very intimate experience with. PINKED – hopefully has a home!

But for any of you that think we simply get to write and then if accepted sit back and wait for publication and money and accolades – you’re wrong. Writing is also about marketing. Gone are the days that agents and publishes market for you – in part because of the economy and in part because of the big box stores going the way of so many things. It’s the electronic age. While Amazon has a lion’s share of the market with 65%, Apple is making headway with almost 30%. Sadly that leaves 5% for locations like All Romance E Books and Bookstrand. But I can tell you that they have very loyal followers.

So how do I market? I have a regular facebook page and a fan page for both my pseduo and my real name. I’m also going to have to create one for the new girl, Dakotah Black, coming up for the Pinked series. In addition I tweet – generally 40 times a day, some promoing and some just talking. I do blogs here on my own and about on average four guest blogs a week. I regularly write for Naughty Nights Press and Queer Online magazine and these are at least monthly, sometimes more. I’m actively promoting my latest release, Breakfast Eye Candy, and the upcoming ones.

I also participate in 38 yahoo groups – some for promo of course. I work with my fellow Rebel Ink writers during live chats on several of the romance sites – usually two a month and I also have one radio show a month I host highlighting fellow writers in several genres. In addition, I put together promo items such as snippets to put at location like The Romance Reviews and The Romance Studio and of course answer fans. I also participate in Six Sentence Sunday – which is a wonderful way of getting six little sentences about a work out to a huge number of folks looking at sites. I love it.

I also put together poems that I use, some in my books and some to draw more attention and I make my own book trailers. I’m starting to get involved in conferences – loving being asked to go guest panels and having a blast putting together marketing items for them. So… when do I write you ask? As often as humanly possible.

I tend to work on more than one at a time. I am fortunate that I can write very fast and have a notebook FULL of ideas. I don’t sleep well at night thinking about the stories. It’s amazing and terrifying at the same time. While money is to be made, I think it’s about developing a following and I LOVE my readers. They are really giving me wonderful feedback and I love it.

I have at least one yummy coming out a month for the next year and I SO hope that I can expand on that. I’m proud to say that my latest release, Game Over, has been bumped up and I think will be out this week. It’s my first m/m piece and I’m proud that it’s snack in the middle of Gay Pride Month. It will be available everywhere including All Romance E Books, Bookstrand, Amazon Kindle and Barnes & Noble Pubit. Take a taste of the synopsis and see what you think.

Tony Dartanion relished his life but he kept his private life hidden from the majority of the world. A decorated detective in the grittiest precinct in the Philadelphia police department, he was hungry to make Captain and willing to do almost anything. Unfortunately the old boy’s school had a don’t ask, don’t tell policy that enraged him and yet he kept his sexual appetites concealed. The boys in blue believed that he was a card-carrying man that desired all things in a skirt and stilettos. The truth was that he was in love with a man and one that he barely acknowledged outside of their bedroom. Caelen Tomlin was tired of being a dirty little secret.

In the beginning they had savored a highly erotic relationship and now, they were barely more than friends. Realizing he was going to lose the golden haired model if he didn’t change his ways, he planned a naughty event to entice Caelen and remind him of exactly why they were together. Sealed With a Kiss was a scandalous secluded club that catered to all things kinky and Tony was determined to fulfill every fantasy his lover craved and change his ridiculous ways. Unforgiving, Caelen refused to accept and Tony was forced to make an excruciating choice.

I hope you enjoyed a taste of my next release and learning a bit more about me! Enjoy and I’d love to hear from you.

Kisses   xxx

Cass, you forgot one important thing. You always find time to encourage fellow writers. I already admired your work ethic but now I’m adoring you even more. I found myself in a funky mood this morning because there just never seems to be enough hours in my day. Reading your post makes me feel like a whiney slacker. It was just the kick in the butt I needed. HUGS!!!

  3. Great post and all so true! The writing life isn’t always what readers and would-be writers think but I still wouldn’t trade it for anything else.

  4. I have still got a lot to learn. You are always busy and this explains it all.
