Mmm… It’s that spooky time of year and I’m sitting here tonight writing this waiting for the brand new Dracula to bite it’s way onto my television set. Yes, I do love the very concept of being taken in an entirely different manner in which I write about. There is something so incredible about the thought of living forever, isn’t there? We would all like to enjoy immortality, sharing love and sex, enjoying fine wine and food, partaking in dangerous behavior without fear of losing our lives. There is also something so glamorous about the very concept. I’ve often written about the fact we tend to hunger to something we don’t understand, a darker side of our needs. For those of us who can embrace such an incredible draw, a breathless taste, how delicious indeed.
I think that’s why we’re all drawn to the darker, kinkier and very sensual side of creatures of the night. We’ve all seen at least one movie that highlights monsters who drink our blood, killers who thrive in the darkness. There is something exhilarating about seeing vampires who draw us into their worlds. No matter the fact vampires suddenly flooded the market of writing and movies over the last few years, we love them. Most women if asked crave having a vampire suddenly appear in our bedrooms at night. We want the sexy man to sink his teeth into our necks, embrace the nirvana of ecstasy that movies portray. And we want to have him become our lover. We hunger to have him take total control over us as he gives us a night of unbridled passion. Don’t you dare try and say otherwise. You know if vampires truly exist you would offer your naked body to a vampire in exchange for the love only he can give to you. How sinful. How incredible. Right?
It’s that time of year where we all things about creatures who go bump in the night. We live the world of the spirits if for only one terrifying evening, a hallowed moment we feel close to spirits and evil. We allow ourselves to pretend to be one of them. And we want to live the life – or so we think. We long to share a passionate moment, one unlike anything we’ve ever experienced in our lives – or our death. Vampires have been popular for a very long time. I remember sitting in front of the television when I was very small watching Dark Shadows. The television show was one of the first serial dramas and the very evil aura around the very sexy drama was well received, albeit kinky for the time.
I will never forget the lasting effect that Barnabus Collins had on me. By today’s standards he wasn’t particularly sexy and of course there was little in the way of sexiness, but the way he was portrayed both as a vampire and as a man was intense. Passionate. He was the epitome of a man. Sadly, the remake is for me personally less than desirable. Vampires are all the rage and we seem to endure good movies as well as those so terrible we relegate them into the categories of cheesy. But we still hunger for more of them.
Today the vampires are much sexier, luring us into their web of pure passion, raging desire. The very thought of being seduced by a vampire is a tremendous fantasy. I know it is for me. Why do you think there is such an allure for creatures that can potentially shred apart our flesh? Because we want what we can’t have. We long for a single taste of the unknown, an uninhibited experience. We want to be the perfect mate to a monster. The fact vampire movies come and go in popularity I don’t think will ever change. Vampires and other creatures like werewolves and ghosts draw us all into another world, one in which we are able to lose control. When vampires ceased to be terrifying, their roles changing into sexual beings, their popularity soaring.
We’ve all laughed about vampires who sparkle, but for all the naysayers, the Twilight saga has been as beneficial for the paranormal industry as Fifty Shades of Gray has been for BDSM – whether you choose to believe or not. We long to fade into a world of fantasy, one that encompasses a far removal from our day to day lives. We’re all living in such a strangled environment that the thought alone of another world is intriguing enticing. My day job is a horrible reminder that people are pretty nasty so writing about everything from sex to killing people is my release – maybe my salvation.
I write about vampires in many of my books. In mine they kill people. No, they slaughter humans in a folly of rage as well as hunger. Do they provide nights of passion? Do they give you an insight into what some might consider to be a vision of our personal demons? Oh you bet. Through seeing through their eyes we catch a glimpse of error as well as a formidable force of good versus evil – my favorite topic.
I set out to write a cop drama a couple of years ago and it turned into a horror piece about monsters. We all know fire kills, but for creatures of the night, they destroy their very being permanently. When I created the Fire series I had no idea how powerful the story line would be. In honor of the amazing holiday, a reminder what the collection is about. These pieces have been called far too horrific to call a romance, but for one male vampire and one angry male cop, there is a very powerful relationship. Vampires inspire and intrigue. This is the first of three and it’s not what you expect. O allow me to ask you a question. Would you succumb to one if they offered you more than just immortality? I think I know the answer…
